Tales from Abroad
Peru Winter Break 2006-07 "We sat on the concrete bleachers overlooking the cement futbol court. One of my classmates, Raul, suggested that we see if we could join in. We walked out on to the court and asked if they would let us play. They agreed and we broke up into new teams – Raul and I were on one team with six other boys, ages seven to fifteen and the other team had an equal number of players. One of the boys asked if we could play for Coca-Cola. Soccer is always a little more exciting with a prize at stake – so we agreed to play for Cokes. The game started and before we knew it our team was down by four goals and four players as well. The opposing team was gaining players and pretty soon Raul and I were left with two small boys on our side. We looked at each other and laughed, the boys wanted Cokes so bad that they switched over to the winning team. We counted heads and we ran to get the sodas for both teams. We brought the Cokes on to the court and the boys cheered. We were repaid with high fives and hugs." Megan Lawrence
