"There is only one word that can describe my recent study abroad experience exploring the beautiful outback of Australia: breathtaking. I am currently a sophomore attending Michigan State University pursuing a major in Political Science-Prelaw. Participating in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity opened up my eyes to a world beyond the grassy green campus of MSU. The most educational portion of the trip was neither during class lectures nor the countless field trips, but rather through the interactions with the locals.
The Australian “no worries” attitude was somewhat refreshing compared to the stressful lifestyles we lead in America. I have come to realize that as Americans we are always in such a hurry to start our days as early as possible in order to accomplish everything at once. Our days end just as quickly as they begin – constantly rushing around, never allowing time to just enjoy life and the company of others. Being exposed to such a laid-back culture has influenced the way I want to live my life by teaching me how to relax and live one day at a time.
Life's most important lessons cannot be taught through lectures given by teachers or text books. They are discovered through experiencing the world first-hand by exploring the unknown. There is not a single picture or story I could possibly share that would be able to describe what I have experienced emotionally while I was “down under.” I have learned more about myself and the lifestyle I live from studying abroad than I have learned in all 14 years of schooling. It was not only an educational opportunity; it was more of an inspirational experience."
