Student Safety and Security on Study Abroad

Michigan State University recognizes the vital role that safety plays in all stages and aspects of any study abroad experience. While acknowledging that no plan can account for all contingencies, MSU strives to keep all phases and aspects of your participation in study abroad as safe as possible. As part of these efforts to enhance the safety and well-being of study abroad participants, MSU establishes safety-related policies and procedures and encourages participants to take personal responsibility for their safety through their knowledge of and adherence to these policies and procedures before departing, while abroad and upon return.

MSU continuously monitors our study abroad sites and countries for concerns related to safety and security. Such monitoring and oversight refers also to policy and procedures for evaluating the safety of programs and or program locations, including the training of faculty and staff to manage emergencies abroad, planning for and responding to emergencies, including response to widespread emergencies (like a natural disaster or a political coup).

The University of Southern California Center for Global Education Safety Abroad Handbook provides resources and preparation tips for students considering and/or planning for study abroad and parents trying to help them.
The Association for Safe International Road Travel is a non-profit, humanitarian organization that promotes road travel safety through education and advocacy. ASIRT provides travelers with road safety information, enabling them to make informed travel choices.
The Overseas Security Advisory Council is a division of the U.S. State Department that fosters the exchange of security information between the government and the private sector operating abroad.
The Federal Aviation Administration contains up-to-date information on which airports (domestic & foreign) “meet current aviation security requirements.” It also includes an FAQ section that is updated frequently.
The Transportation Security Information office monitors and protects all modes of transportation in the US to ensure the safe transport of people and commerce. The web site contains information about security precautions, restrictions with respect to border crossings by land, sea or air.
The Australian Foreign Affairs and Trade office provides tips for travelers and consular information sheets (similar to those created by our own State Department).
The Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade site includes travel information and advisory reports from the Canadian government.
United Kingdom Foreign and Commonwealth Office is the British version of the U.S. State Department consular information sheets and provides information on world news and travel.
