Statement Regarding SARS and Study Abroad

April 14, 2003

The Office of Study Abroad is carefully monitoring the development of the SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) outbreak. Currently, the most affected areas are: China, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Viet Nam. MSU is monitoring information from the CDC and the WHO (World Health Organization), as well as receiving advice from the University's medical staff.

At this time, the following changes have been made to programs:

  1. An MBA program scheduled to go to Singapore and Thailand will now go to Scandinavia instead.
  2. The MBA program scheduled to go to Beijing and Shanghai in May 2003 has been suspended for 2003. We plan to run the program in May 2004.
  3. The ANR program (Economic Development and Environmental Management) scheduled to go to China in mid-May 2003 has been suspended for 2003. We plan to run the program in May 2004.
  4. The James Madison College program to Beijing (China in World Affairs) scheduled to go to China in mid-May has been suspended for 2003. We plan to run the program in May 2004.

If other programs become altered or suspended due to SARS, we will immediately inform affected students and post the information here.

We encourage everyone to review the pertinent information regarding SARS. Information can be found on the following web sites:
