Food, Agriculture and Environmental Systems in the United Kingdom and Ireland Summer Semester (US) 2004 Not running Summer 2007 College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Arranged through the Office of Study Abroad (OSA) What's this program about? Travel to the enchanted emerald isle of Ireland, the highland glens of Scotland, the historic and captivating countryside of England and the spectacular landscape of Northern Ireland while earning credits toward your college degree! Visit farms, food processing plants, agribusinesses and natural resource sites while exploring policy issues relevant to rural development and international trade. Though the course of study focuses on food and natural resources, it also includes visits to many cultural and historical sites throughout the area. You will stay in quaint bed-and-breakfast inns, private homes and university residence halls, as well as hotels in the metropolitan cities of Dublin, Edinburgh, and London. You will also visit medieval walled cities, majestic cathedrals and legendary castles steeped in history. At the end of the program, many students take advantage of the opportunity to travel throughout the United Kingdom and other parts of Europe. From the course listing below, undergraduate students will be required to enroll in a minimum of six (6) credits. Graduate students will be required to enroll in four (4) credits. Students who desire additional credits or Honors credit must make arrangements with the program faculty.
Students will also be required to attend six to eight pre-departure orientations during Spring Semester 2004. Typically, these sessions meet from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday evenings. MSU students, as well as students from other colleges and universities, are eligible to apply. Students must be in good academic standing, with a grade point average of at least 2.75 at the time of application. Meeting this minimum grade point average does not, however, guarantee admission - additional eligibility criteria may apply. Applicants must also be in good physical condition and have the ability to deal with heights. This program involves hiking and field study activities. An applicant's participation may be denied or their participation approval may be revoked if their conduct before departure raises doubts as to their suitability for program participation. MSU students pay the same amount they would pay to study at MSU; non-MSU students pay the Lifelong Education rate, regardless of state of residence. Once enrolled in courses, students will receive a bill from the MSU Student Accounts Office for the study abroad program fee and tuition and fees, based on the number of credits taken. Program fees, dates, and arrangements may be subject to change due to unexpected circumstances. How can I pay for it? Financial assistance is available when students make appropriate arrangements with OSA and MSU's Office of Financial Aid. All students planning to use financial aid toward a study abroad program must indicate their intentions on the study abroad application. Non-MSU students should check with their home institution's financial aid office. For more information about financial aid - click here Additionally, MSU students may apply for scholarships (based exclusively on academic performance or based on both academic performance and financial need) offered through the Office of Study Abroad. Requirements are listed in the application instructions. The deadline to apply for the scholarships is February 1st for summer programs. Thanks to a generous study abroad scholarship endowment by the MSU Federal Credit Union, more students will be able to participate in study abroad and reap the many academic, personal and professional benefits these experiences provide them. For more information about scholarships - click here How do I apply? Students can apply for this program by completing a study abroad application and submitting it to 109 International Center. To obtain an application click here or go to the Office of Study Abroad. Applications must be received by March 1st for summer programs. We strongly recommend that students apply early as this program may fill to capacity prior to this deadline. In past years, this program has filled as early as Thanksgiving so make sure to apply early! The selection of applicants is done on a rolling admission basis. Applicants are evaluated and considered for admission throughout the academic year based on the eligibility criteria for this program and not necessarily on a first-come, first-served basis. A $100 application fee is required. Students will receive a bill from the MSU Student Accounts Office for the application fee that is applied to the cost of the program and is non-refundable once a student has accepted admission into the program. Students who have accepted admission will also be billed for a non-refundable and non-transferable $200 deposit, also applied to the cost of the program. Students who wish to withdraw their application are required to notify the Office of Study Abroad, in writing, that they no longer intend to participate.
